Well on my way.

My new car has been decided. I know just what I want and now all I need to do is find it.

I knew from the start that I wanted a ‘04 or ‘05 Mazdaspeed MX-5. I’ve known that since I went to Mazda’s “Rev It Up” event in march of 2004 and test-drove one. That was the most fun I’ve ever had behind the wheel of a car. For the rest of the entire event that was all I did was wait in line for more test drives. My God, it was freaking sweet. Like piloting a jet powered skateboard with a seat strapped to it.

Now, after much research and deep contemplation, I have decided to look at 2005 model year vehicles exclusively. This is because in 2004 they only offered two colors. Velocity Red Mica, an interesting bright red that has hints of orange where the light hits it just right, and Titanium Grey Metallic, a dark blueish metallic gray that is the same color as my moms 2004 RX-8. Now I like the Titanium color a lot but the color doesn’t have a whole lot of “passion” to it. It’s more understated, more sedated. I need something to make the car stand out as me but not just to anybody. I only really want it to stand out to those who know me. But the red is more humdrum than the gray because EVERY sweet little drop-top sports car is red. Therefor it, also, was not distinctively “me”.

Model year 2005 brought a few changes to the Mazdaspeed MX-5 like wheels and, most notably, two more color options. At first I thought the Black Mica was the perfect choice but the more I thought about it the more problems I recalled about having a black car. The constant need for washing, the high visibility of any flaw in the paint or body, the relative lack of visibility at night which will raise the likelihood of someone changing lanes into me, among other things.

So the other color warranted an investigation into its viability as a representative of every facet of my self, if such a thing can actually exist. At first it seemed like any other orange sherbet color but then I stumbled onto some great pics on cardomain.com and I was hooked. I had to have Lava Orange Mica. In bright sunlight it is a rather orangy….. orange. But it seems as though it will not glow in the dark like many orange paint jobs out there. At night it seems to soften to a dark copper color. Very nice against the “smoke” colored headlight housings.

The final point that drove the unique factor in is that Lava Orange Mica cars with leather interior has silver stitching instead of the red stitching used on the leather of every other color MSMX-5. Also the fact that they only had this color for one year on an already limited production model of MX-5 means my car will be one of around 400 like it in the whole country.

The meaning has changed, but the attitude is the same.
